In Tampere, traffic counting data from sensors, cameras and traffic lights is collected on the IoT platform supplied by Wapice Oy. The city has an agreement with Wapice that extends until 2031, which enables the long-term development of the solutions.

In terms of traffic, the IoT platform mainly collects and manages information related to traffic volumes. The “Tampere Kävelyn ja kaupunkielämän ohjelma 2030 (2022)” paved the way for monitoring pedestrian traffic and later other traffic volumes with a machine vision-based solution. The solution utilizes the city’s surveillance cameras, and hourly data is collected on the IoT platform in compliance with GDPR data protection practices.

Data from fixed traffic measurements and from traffic light sensors are also imported to the IoT platform. In just a few years, the number of measuring points has increased dramatically and is now  approaching 2,000 measuring points around the city. 

The data on the IoT platform is primarily intended for the city’s internal use, but it is also available to external operators with a separate agreement. However, traffic counting data is also published in various open channels:
