In Tampere, traffic counting data from sensors, cameras and traffic lights is collected on the IoT platform supplied by Wapice Oy. The city has an agreement with Wapice that extends until 2031, which enables the long-term development of the solutions.
In terms of traffic, the IoT platform mainly collects and manages information related to traffic volumes. The “Tampere Kävelyn ja kaupunkielämän ohjelma 2030 (2022)” paved the way for monitoring pedestrian traffic and later other traffic volumes with a machine vision-based solution. The solution utilizes the city’s surveillance cameras, and hourly data is collected on the IoT platform in compliance with GDPR data protection practices.
Data from fixed traffic measurements and from traffic light sensors are also imported to the IoT platform. In just a few years, the number of measuring points has increased dramatically and is now approaching 2,000 measuring points around the city.
The data on the IoT platform is primarily intended for the city’s internal use, but it is also available to external operators with a separate agreement. However, traffic counting data is also published in various open channels:
- IoT marketplace https://marketplace.iot.tampere.fi// is the main channel for data sharing
- Easy way to The best way just to view the data is in the city’s Oskari map service. https://kartat.tampere.fi/oskari/. In addition to current traffic volumes, the map service also displays historical data on old traffic volumes as comprehensively as possible on the map. For the selected map layer (Selected Layers Style), there is an option to filter the displayed data.
- Through the city’s data portal https://data.tampere.fi/fi/, you can find the Open Data pages. Through it, traffic data types can be downloaded as files in different formats or read through an API.
- The city’s interface website https://www.tampere.fi/viestinta/rajapinnat-avoin-data-ja-mobiilipalvelut provides general information on licenses, data protection and information management.
